Christopher Nolan isn’t sweating the online drama surrounding his ambitious new film ‘The Odyssey’. The acclaimed director fired back this week at critics taking issue with the movie’s use of modern English dialogue and American accents in what’s based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
Christopher Nolan responds to criticism over the use of modern English dialogue in The Odyssey, explaining his creative vision and urging audiences to wait until the film is released before judging it.
“People haven’t seen the film yet,” Nolan said bluntly, dismissing the prerelease chatter as pointless. He’s learned from experience, he added, that arguing about movies on social media before they hit theaters is just part of the game.
Ever since trailers dropped, movie fans have been vocal about their concerns. Characters speak in contemporary English with mostly American accents—a choice that struck some viewers as tone-deaf for a classical source material. The criticism extended beyond dialogue to casting decisions and how the film interprets the legendary myth.
The director stood firm on his creative choices, explaining that he deliberately opted for modern, accessible language to help today’s audiences connect emotionally with the story. Rather than attempting some artificial recreation of ancient Greek speech, he wanted dialogue that felt genuine and immediate.
Nolan acknowledged the approach would be divisive but stressed that all storytelling requires interpretation rather than historical accuracy.
Drawing on lessons from directing the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy, Nolan shrugged off the backlash as business as usual. Filmmakers, he suggested, need to focus on making the best film possible instead of chasing approval on social media.
‘The Odyssey’ remains one of the year’s most hotly anticipated films, boasting a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron.
Once audiences finally get to see it, all the debate will either fade away or intensify. Until then, Nolan seems content to let his work speak for itself.
