Colman Domingo is in negotiations to co-write a new live-action Disney film centered on Princess Tiana, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Rather than a direct remake, the project will be an original story inspired by the beloved 2009 animated film ‘The Princess and the Frog’.
Domingo would collaborate with Tony-nominated director and playwright Robert O’Hara on the screenplay. While the talks are underway, deals remain unsigned and the project is still in its early stages.
The film represents a significant pivot for the character’s future at Disney. The studio had previously planned an animated ‘Tiana’ series for Disney+, which was shelved in 2025. This live-action project marks a new direction for one of the Mouse House’s most popular modern characters.
The original ‘Princess and the Frog’ followed Tiana, an ambitious restaurant owner in New Orleans whose life takes an unexpected turn when she’s transformed into a frog while helping a prince break a curse. The new film is expected to expand her world with fresh storytelling rather than simply retell that narrative.
For Domingo, known for his work in film, television, and theater, the project would add another marquee credit to an already impressive résumé. O’Hara’s involvement brings considerable stage and screenwriting expertise to the venture. The character has remained a fan favorite since her debut, making this development one of the more closely watched Disney projects in the works.
