Disney’s new supernatural series Coven Academy is taking a different approach to television. Instead of sticking to a fixed runtime, its episodes range from just 10 minutes to around 22 minutes.
Creator Tim Federle recently explained the unusual format in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. According to him, the shorter episodes are not simply about changing how audiences watch TV. Instead, they are part of the show’s storytelling strategy.
The series premieres on Freeform on October 1, 2026. The full season will then arrive on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand the following day.
The Story Behind Coven Academy
Set in New Orleans, Coven Academy follows Briar, an independent teenager who discovers that she is a witch. Soon, she enters an elite magic school filled with secrets, supernatural powers and complicated relationships.
Meanwhile, Briar meets a colorful group of supernatural students. Malachi Barton plays Jake, a charismatic warlock with his own secrets.
Jordan Leftwich stars as Sasha, a student with mind-reading abilities. Ora Duplass plays Tegan, a witch who can manipulate time.
Louis Thresher also joins the cast as Ollie, a newly turned vampire. In addition, Tiffani Thiessen plays Miss Graves, the glamorous head of the academy.
Devon Sawa rounds out the ensemble as Mr. Cole, a charismatic warlock professor.
Why Does Coven Academy Have Short Episodes?
So, why are the episodes so short?
Federle has made it clear that the decision is not about assuming younger viewers have short attention spans. Instead, the creators wanted to experiment with the traditional television structure.
The idea is simple. The series keeps the character development and story depth of a longer TV drama. However, it delivers that story through shorter chapters.
As a result, viewers can move quickly from one part of the story to the next. At the same time, important character arcs and major story payoffs can continue across the season.
A Chapter-Based Storytelling Style
Rather than treating every episode as a completely separate story, Coven Academy uses its installments as connected chapters.
This approach also helps maintain momentum. One chapter can end with a reveal, while the next can immediately pick up the story.
Moreover, the format could make the series particularly easy to spree. Viewers do not have to wait long before discovering what happens next.
Therefore, the shorter runtime does not necessarily mean a smaller story. Instead, it changes how that story is divided.
An Original Story With Room to Grow
Another important part of Coven Academy is its originality.
The series is not based on an existing book or major franchise. That gives Federle and his creative team more freedom to build their own supernatural world.
The concept reportedly developed after Federle spoke with Disney executive Ayo Davis about his next project following High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
The witch concept quickly took shape. Federle’s interest in 1990s supernatural television also helped influence the series.
Shows such as Charmed and Dawson’s Creek were among the influences behind the mix of magic and teen drama.
The Story Goes Beyond Magic
Of course, magic is only one part of the series.
At its core, Coven Academy also explores friendship, romance, identity and family secrets. The young characters must deal with ordinary teenage problems while managing extraordinary abilities.
That combination gives the series a familiar YA foundation. However, supernatural powers add much higher stakes.
As the students learn more about themselves, they also discover that their abilities can have serious consequences.
Federle’s Take on Young Audiences
Federle also challenged the idea that shorter episodes are automatically better suited to younger viewers.
His approach focuses more on storytelling than attention spans. If audiences become invested in the characters, they can still follow a story across an entire season.
That idea is reflected in the structure of Coven Academy. Although individual chapters are short, the larger narrative continues to build.
Consequently, viewers are expected to follow character relationships, mysteries and supernatural conflicts across multiple episodes.
A Different Format for YA Television
Ultimately, the episode structure may become one of Coven Academy’s biggest talking points.
Traditional television often relies on predictable runtimes. This series takes a different route by allowing each chapter to have the length needed for its story.
Some episodes may last only 10 minutes. Others can stretch closer to 22 minutes.
That flexibility allows the storytelling to dictate the runtime rather than forcing every chapter into the same format.

The supernatural drama arrives just in time for the Halloween season.
