Curry Barker isn’t slowing down. Fresh off the massive success of Obsession, the 26-year-old horror filmmaker has locked in his next film deal with Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster—cementing his status as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young directors.
Curry Barker has landed his next film with Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster after the breakout success of Obsession. The rising horror director is also working on Anything But Ghosts and a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre project.
The deal keeps Barker within the studio family, with Universal tapping its existing first-look relationship with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster to secure the filmmaker for another project.
It’s a rapid ascent for the former YouTube creator. Obsession started as a modest release but snowballed into a box office sensation, turning Barker into one of the hottest names in modern horror. Studios took notice immediately, but Universal’s established ties with both Blumhouse and Atomic Monster gave the company an edge.
Barker’s schedule is already overflowing. He recently wrapped Anything But Ghosts, a supernatural horror film starring Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard that’s currently in post-production. He’s also attached to direct an A24 reimagining of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
That means Barker now faces the enviable problem of choosing between original concepts and major franchise opportunities. According to the director, the freedom is both thrilling and overwhelming.
The Blumhouse and Atomic Monster partnership continues to expand its reach in genre filmmaking, and landing Barker reinforces their strategy of nurturing emerging horror talent. Details about his new Universal project remain under wraps for now.
But with two major films in the pipeline and multiple franchise offers on the table, Barker’s meteoric rise shows no sign of stopping.
