Eddie Murphy is making a major return to television. The comedy icon is set to star in The Chairman, a new drama series in development at Peacock with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner attached.
If the project gets a series order, it will mark Murphy’s first leading role in a live-action scripted TV series. That makes the project a notable new chapter for the actor.
For now, Peacock is keeping the storyline under wraps. However, the combination of Murphy and Weiner has already put The Chairman on Hollywood’s radar.
From SNL to a New TV Chapter
Murphy’s television journey began more than four decades ago. He joined Saturday Night Live in 1980 and quickly became one of the show’s breakout stars.
Soon after, he moved into movies and built a hugely successful film career. Since then, his work has included comedy, drama, voice acting and blockbuster franchises.
Now, The Chairman could take Murphy back to television in a completely different format. Instead of sketch comedy, he would lead an ongoing scripted drama.
That would also allow him to explore one character over multiple episodes. If the series continues beyond its first season, the role could develop even further.
Matthew Weiner Leads the Project
Meanwhile, Matthew Weiner brings an impressive television résumé to the series. He created and served as showrunner of Mad Men, the acclaimed AMC drama that ran for seven seasons.
Before Mad Men, Weiner worked as a writer and executive producer on The Sopranos. His career has largely focused on detailed characters and complex storytelling.
Therefore, his collaboration with Murphy is particularly intriguing. Murphy is best known for comedy and larger-than-life movie performances, while Weiner has built his reputation around sophisticated television dramas.
For The Chairman, Weiner is attached as creator and producer. Murphy will also take on a producing role.
The Chairman Plot Remains Secret
So, what exactly is The Chairman about?
At the moment, very little is known. Peacock has not revealed the series’ setting, central storyline or Murphy’s character.
As a result, the announcement is currently driven by the talent behind the project. More plot details are expected if Peacock moves forward with a formal series order.
However, there is no confirmed premiere date yet. The project remains in development.
A Strong Production Team
The series also has established production companies behind it. The Chairman is being produced by 101 Studios and Universal Television.
101 Studios, led by David Glasser, has been behind major television projects including Yellowstone and Landman. Its involvement adds another significant name to the project.
Moreover, industry reports indicate that The Chairman is the first project connected to a broader production arrangement involving NBCUniversal and 101 Studios.
That gives the upcoming drama another interesting layer as it moves through development.
Eddie Murphy Embraces Drama
Although Murphy is best known for comedy, he has already shown his dramatic range. His performance in Dreamgirls earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
More recently, he returned to one of his most famous roles in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. He has also continued working across movies, streaming projects and comedy.
Therefore, The Chairman would not be Murphy’s first serious acting challenge. However, television would give him a different opportunity.
A long-form drama can allow an actor to explore a character gradually. Murphy could potentially bring that same versatility to a television audience.
Why The Project Stands Out
The biggest attraction is arguably the creative pairing. Murphy brings decades of experience as a performer, while Weiner brings extensive experience creating character-driven television.
At the same time, the contrast between their backgrounds makes the project especially interesting. Murphy’s comedy legacy is enormous, but The Chairman could highlight another side of his acting.
Still, it is too early to know what the finished series will look like. The show has not yet received an official series order.
What Happens Next?
For now, fans will have to wait for Peacock to reveal more. Details about the storyline, supporting cast and production timeline remain unknown.
If the project moves ahead, Murphy’s transition into a leading live-action television drama could become one of the more notable developments in his career.
Until then, The Chairman remains an intriguing project with two major creative forces attached.
