Ellie Bamber Portrays Kate Moss in Empowering Role

Actress Ellie Bamber has opened up about the experience of portraying legendary supermodel Kate Moss in the new biographical drama Moss & Freud, calling it “really empowering.” Moss herself has praised the 29-year-old British star, describing her as an “enigma of a person.”

The film, set to hit UK cinemas on May 29, 2026, tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Moss and celebrated painter Lucian Freud, centered on their 2002 collaboration that produced the now-iconic portrait Naked Portrait.

At a photocall for the film, Bamber reflected on how Moss has managed her public profile with grace. She told the Press Association that the role was deeply rewarding.

“I think that [the film] just talks about all kinds of aspects of a creative industry, and the vulnerable place you put yourself when you are in the public eye or in a public-facing world,” Bamber explained.

The actress, known for her work in Willow, The Serpent, and Nocturnal Animals, clearly relished the challenge of bringing such an iconic figure to life.

The film dramatizes the 2002 moment when the then-81-year-old Freud unveiled a striking full-length portrait of a pregnant Kate Moss. The painting captured the intimacy of their creative bond, and now their story is coming to the screen.

Kate Moss herself championed the project, serving as executive producer and working with the Lucian Freud archive to ensure the film told her version of events.

Derek Jacobi takes on the role of Lucian Freud, bringing his acclaimed talent from films like Murder on the Orient Express to the part. Oscar-winning director James Lucas, known for The Phone Call, is helming the production.

Moss & Freud arrives in UK cinemas on May 29, 2026, and is currently available on VOD through Cineverse.
