George Clooney will receive one of cinema’s highest honors when the 2026 Venice International Film Festival presents him with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, recognizing his more than three decades of achievements as an actor, director and producer.
George Clooney will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2026 Venice Film Festival, recognizing his decades-long contributions to filmmaking as an acclaimed actor, director and producer.
Festival organizers announced the honor on Tuesday and confirmed that the 83rd Venice Film Festival will run from September 2 to September 12, 2026. The award recognizes Clooney’s lasting impact on global cinema and his enduring relationship with the prestigious Italian festival.
Clooney first appeared at the Venice Film Festival in 1998 with Steven Soderbergh’s crime drama Out of Sight. Since then, he has become a familiar presence on the Venice red carpet, returning regularly with projects as both an actor and filmmaker.
His Venice premieres include Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), which he directed and co-wrote; Michael Clayton (2007); Burn After Reading (2008); The Ides of March (2011), which he also directed; Gravity (2013); Suburbicon (2017); Wolfs (2024), co-starring Brad Pitt; and Jay Kelly (2025).
Venice also holds personal significance for Clooney. He married human rights lawyer Amal Clooney in the city in 2014, making the festival destination an important part of both his professional and personal life.
The two-time Academy Award winner responded to the announcement with his trademark humor.
“I’ve had so many extraordinary moments in Venice. This festival is without question my favorite and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honor,” Clooney said. “It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.”
Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera praised Clooney as one of contemporary cinema’s defining talents, highlighting his work as an actor, director and producer. He described Clooney as a charismatic filmmaker who combines classic Hollywood star power with modern storytelling.
Clooney launched his rise to international stardom by playing Dr. Doug Ross on the hit television drama ER before establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most respected leading men. Throughout his career, he has balanced blockbuster entertainment with critically acclaimed dramas, starring in films such as Ocean’s Eleven, Syriana, Michael Clayton, The Descendants and Up in the Air.
The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement marks another milestone in Clooney’s distinguished career as he returns to Venice to accept one of the film industry’s most prestigious honors.
