Starting on October 20, 2025, the Trump administration will make it harder for green card holders to become US citizens. People who file Form N-400 for naturalization on or after this date must pass the new 2025 Naturalization Civics Test. This test requires them to answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly during the civics interview. This test has twice as many questions as the last one. Therefore, you need to know more about American history, politics, and government.
People with green cards who file before October 20 will still have to take the civics test in 2008. The new test is part of a larger set of changes to immigration laws. These changes are meant to make sure that people who are eligible for US citizenship fully understand and agree with American values. If you don’t pass, you could lose your citizenship. Even if you got it through illegal means or lying, you could still lose it. Moreover, the Department of Justice is actively looking into these cases.
People who are 65 or older and have lived in the country for 20 years can still get special treatment. This treatment lets them take a simpler version of the test. The changes show that the administration is focused on strict citizenship standards. These changes will affect immigrants and lawful permanent residents who want to become Americans.
