Grey’s Anatomy Finale: Owen and Teddy’s Journey

After nearly two decades on screen, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are leaving Grey’s Anatomy, bringing one of the show’s most turbulent love stories to a close. The Season 22 finale sends Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman off together to Paris, giving fans the happy ending they’ve waited years to see.

Why the show decided to let them go

The decision to write out both characters came down to a combination of creative choices and the financial realities facing network television dramas. Showrunner Meg Marinis made the call shortly after the new year, acknowledging that the shift in TV economics meant trimming the ensemble cast.

While Marinis admitted the decision was “super painful” given her attachment to both the characters and actors, she felt Owen and Teddy’s storylines had reached their natural conclusion.

How they exited in the finale

The Season 22 finale puts Owen through his paces during a dramatic bridge collapse, where he uses his military background to rescue multiple patients. Teddy rushes to his aid, and the near-tragedy forces them to confront what comes next.

Rather than stay in Seattle, the couple decides to leave Grey Sloan Memorial together. Teddy takes a job opportunity in Paris, and Owen chooses to go with her—finally closing the book on years of breakups and heartbreak in the same city.

In their final scene, Owen and Teddy quietly say goodbye to the hospital. It’s a rare moment of peace for a couple that’s endured betrayal and endless complications.

Keeping them together made sense

Marinis explained that while the show could have kept only one of them, sending them off as a “package deal” made more narrative sense. Their shared history and family life meant separating them would have created messy storytelling problems down the road.

By walking away together, the writers gave closure to a storyline fans have been invested in for years—and gave the show a clean slate moving forward.
