Oscar-winning actress Jessie Buckley and Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal are joining forces once again. This time, they will star in Hold on to Your Angels, a sweeping love story from director Benh Zeitlin. Zeitlin is known for his visionary work on Beasts of the Southern Wild.
The pair previously collaborated on the acclaimed film Hamnet, where their on-screen chemistry earned Buckley an Academy Award.
A Doomed Love Story in Decay
The film is set against the decaying backdrop of Louisiana’s bayous. There, a hell-bound outlaw played by Mescal crosses paths with Buckley’s character, a fierce protector of lost souls. Consequently, their passionate romance plays out amid catastrophe and deterioration. It has been described as an “impossible love story for the end of America.”
The project blends gritty realism with myth and magic to craft an epic tale of ill-fated desire.
Behind the Scenes
Production is slated to begin in February. It will be backed by Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B and Alex Coco, who produced the award-winning film Anora.
The project will be pitched to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film, running May 12-20.
Director Zeitlin has expressed confidence in his leads, calling them perfectly suited to bring his ambitious vision to life. Their reuniting has already generated significant industry buzz as one of Hollywood’s most compelling acting pairings tackles another demanding project.
