Is Natalie Portman the Inspiration Behind Rachel Cusk’s Controversial New Novel?

Natalie Portman’s name is circulating in literary circles following speculation that she may have inspired Rachel Cusk’s forthcoming novel ‘Life of M’. The book, which centers on a famous actress and the writer documenting her life, has sparked considerable online chatter about whether Portman served as the real-world muse for the story.

The rumors gained traction after UnHerd columnist Valerie Stivers suggested the novel could be a thinly veiled portrait of Portman. Set for release on August 25, 2026, the book is already available for pre-order and tells the story of a celebrated actress known only as M and a writer hired to chronicle her life.

Details within the novel reportedly bear striking similarities to Portman’s actual life, fueling widespread speculation among fans and media outlets. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Portman and Cusk have maintained a friendship, with Portman publicly praising Cusk’s acclaimed ‘Outline’ trilogy—a relationship that has only deepened curiosity about the novel’s true inspiration.

According to reports, the fictional actress in the book shares notable biographical details with Portman, and the character’s dissatisfaction with her eventual portrayal forms a key part of the narrative. Though neither Portman nor Cusk has officially confirmed the connection, the overlap has made ‘Life of M’ one of the most anticipated literary releases of 2026.
