Isabella Rossellini Is Creating a New Animal-Themed Short Film Series

The acclaimed actress and filmmaker is diving back into her passion for animal stories, crediting David Lynch’s creative influence and Robert Redford’s early support for her unconventional documentary work.

Isabella Rossellini is returning to what she does best—telling stories about animals. The Oscar-nominated actress announced she’s working on a fresh series of short films that will explore how domestic animals evolved, blending the science, humor and theatrical flair that made her previous animal documentaries a global sensation.

The new project, called “The Survival of the Friendliest,” will trace the journey of wolves becoming dogs and examine the deep connections that formed between humans and animals over millennia, according to Rossellini.

Rossellini is no stranger to animal-focused filmmaking. Her earlier works ‘Green Porno’, ‘Seduce Me’ and ‘Mammas’ combined comedy, education and performance art to explain animal behavior in creative ways audiences had never seen before.

This time around, she’s shifting gears. Rather than focusing on reproduction, the new series will examine domestication specifically how friendliness became an evolutionary advantage and ultimately brought certain species closer to humans.

While discussing the project, Rossellini reflected on her relationship with filmmaker David Lynch, who directed her breakthrough role in ‘Blue Velvet’. She praised Lynch for championing artistic freedom and pushing creative boundaries throughout his career, noting his influence continues to shape how she approaches her own work.

Rossellini also gave credit to Robert Redford and his Sundance institute for launching her experimental short-film career. She recalled how their partnership gave her the freedom to create web-based animal documentaries in unconventional formats a gamble that ultimately paid off internationally.

Beyond acting, Rossellini has devoted considerable time to studying animal behavior and wildlife conservation. Her background in science combined with her filmmaking skills has allowed her to make complex topics entertaining and accessible to mainstream audiences.
