Michelle Yeoh to Be Honored at Busan Film Festival for Landmark Career in Asian Cinema

Michelle Yeoh, the Oscar-winning actress who made history as the first Asian performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, will receive the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) this October.

The festival will present the prestigious honor during its opening ceremony on October 6, 2026, in Busan, South Korea, recognizing Yeoh’s outstanding contributions to both Asian and global cinema.

The award is one of BIFF’s highest honors and celebrates filmmakers and artists who have expanded the influence and global reach of Asian cinema. Yeoh joins an elite group of past recipients, including directors Jafar Panahi and Hirokazu Kore-eda, along with celebrated actors Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung.

During her four-decade career, Yeoh has transformed the global image of Asian performers. She first rose to fame in Hong Kong action films before establishing herself in Hollywood with standout performances in Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In 2023, she reached another career milestone by winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once, becoming the first Asian performer to earn the honor.

Festival organizers praised Yeoh for breaking stereotypes through her portrayals of strong, independent women. They also credited her with bridging Asian and Hollywood cinema through bold performances and inspiring a new generation of actors and filmmakers.

As part of the celebration, Yeoh will curate a special program featuring four films from her career. She personally selected the titles to highlight defining moments in her journey as an actress.

The award also marks Yeoh’s return to the Busan International Film Festival after 15 years. She last attended the festival in 2011 for The Lady, following her first BIFF appearance in 2002.

The 31st Busan International Film Festival will run from October 6 to October 15, 2026. Yeoh’s recognition is expected to become one of the festival’s biggest highlights, celebrating her lasting impact on Asian and international cinema.
