Lorde is pushing back against Spotify’s new AI-powered “About the Song” feature, saying the tool got the facts wrong about one of her tracks—and shouldn’t exist in its current form.
The artist fired off a complaint on Instagram Stories after spotting an inaccurate AI-generated description attached to her music. She called out the feature for presenting misleading information and linking to the wrong performance details.
But Lorde’s frustration goes deeper than just factual errors. She worries the feature strips songs down to a single, fixed interpretation right at the source, cutting off the open-ended way listeners naturally connect with music. She’s calling on Spotify to at least give artists the ability to opt out.
“I’m going to go out on a limb and say we don’t want this,” she wrote.
Spotify acknowledged the mistake fairly quickly. A company spokesperson said the incorrect information was removed once the issue came to light, and they’re treating “About the Song” as a beta feature still being refined with input from artists and fans. The descriptions currently draw from third-party sources.
The clash underscores a bigger tension playing out across the music industry: how much room should AI have in shaping the way people understand creative work? Lorde’s complaint taps into a legitimate concern—that automated summaries risk flattening the nuance and ambiguity that make songs resonate differently for different listeners.
