Macklemore Under Fire for Pro-Palestine Remarks at Ed Sheeran Concert

Macklemore is facing pressure to be dropped from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour after using his opening slot at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium to speak out in support of Palestine and other global humanitarian causes.

The backlash started when Macklemore took the stage on September 4th and called for a “Free Palestine” before launching into his protest anthem “Hind’s Hall.” The performance featured imagery tied to Gaza and the Palestinian struggle, and he also touched on several other international conflicts and crises.

The Israeli-American Council wasted no time responding, launching a petition demanding that Sheeran and his team remove Macklemore from the rest of the North American leg of the tour. The group argued that major concert venues shouldn’t serve as platforms for political messaging, specifically calling out Macklemore’s opening set remarks.

Meanwhile, Macklemore continues to use his music and live shows as a vehicle for Palestinian advocacy.

“Hind’s Hall,” released in 2024, became the focal point of the controversy. The track stands as one of Macklemore’s boldest statements on the Gaza conflict and the pro-Palestinian campus protests that swept American universities. When he performed it at MetLife Stadium, visuals about Gaza flooded the venue’s screens, ensuring his message reached thousands in the crowd.

Rather than back down, Macklemore defended his position at his second MetLife performance. He emphasized that his message centered on peace, equality, and humanitarian treatment for civilians. He also clarified that his criticism wasn’t aimed at Jewish people but instead focused on equal rights for all.

He later posted clips of his remarks on social media, suggesting that calling for equal treatment shouldn’t be controversial.

As of now, Sheeran hasn’t announced any plans to remove Macklemore from upcoming tour dates. The rapper performed as scheduled at the second MetLife show, and the controversy remains unresolved.
