Madonna Returns to MTV VMAs After 23-Year Absence

Madonna is making a major comeback at the MTV Video Music Awards. The pop legend will open the 2026 ceremony with a live performance her first time taking the stage at the VMAs in more than two decades.

The show kicks off on September 27 in Los Angeles and will air live across CBS, MTV and Paramount+. Industry insiders are already calling Madonna’s return one of the highlights of the year’s biggest music event.

It’s been 23 years since Madonna last performed at the ceremony in 2003, when she shared the stage with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott in a moment that’s still talked about today. Now she’s back and she’ll be opening the show just like she did that year.

The connection runs even deeper. Madonna performed at the very first MTV VMAs in 1984, launching her career-long relationship with the awards show. She took the stage that night with “Like a Virgin,” setting the tone for decades of unforgettable moments.

Madonna isn’t just performing she’s dominating the nomination race. The artist snagged 11 nods, more than any other competitor this year.

Her nominations span across major categories including Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Song of the Year. She’s also in the running for technical awards like Best Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography. Additionally, Madonna earned a nomination for Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter.

The VMAs performance arrives as Madonna’s latest album, Confessions II, brings her firmly back into the spotlight. Her last proper performance at the ceremony came in 2003, though she made an appearance without performing at the 2021 event.

Snoop Dogg will host the 2026 VMAs on September 27 from Los Angeles. With Madonna opening the show, the ceremony is shaping up to be a celebration of both past and present pop culture moments.
