Scott Speedman on Juggling Two ABC Shows and the Possibility of a Felicity Revival

Scott Speedman is experiencing a career renaissance. The actor is riding high as the lead of ABC’s crime dramedy R.J. Decker, where he also serves as an executive producer, while simultaneously maintaining a recurring role on Grey’s Anatomy. In a recent interview, Speedman opened up about what’s next for his detective character, his medical drama commitments, and whether fans might one day see a Felicity reunion.

Speedman portrays R.J. Decker, a former photojournalist turned ex-con who reinvents himself as a private investigator in South Florida. The series draws from Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy and was adapted for television by Elementary creator Rob Doherty.

Season 2 marks a shift in tone for the show. Rather than focusing purely on cases, Speedman says the new episodes will peel back the layers on R.J.’s personal life and family history.

“We put an emphasis on getting to know R.J., his family and his personal life,” Speedman explained.

One major addition to the cast is veteran actor Beau Bridges, who plays Reggie, R.J.’s estranged father. The two have been separated for years, creating a fraught dynamic that brings out a different side of R.J. than viewers see in his professional work. Speedman noted that his character becomes more reactive and emotional when dealing with family matters.

“Working with Beau was a real highlight,” Speedman said, praising both the casting and the on-screen chemistry.

Season 2 will also continue exploring the complicated tension between R.J. and Emi, played by Jaina Lee Ortiz. Rather than moving the characters toward a conventional romance, the show is taking its time.

The death of Emi’s father, Victor Ochoa, in the Season 1 finale sets the stage for significant complications in Season 2. Speedman said the writers are still discovering how their characters will evolve as the story unfolds.

Speedman also confirmed he’ll be returning to Grey’s Anatomy, where he plays Dr. Nick Marsh alongside Ellen Pompeo. His character is now engaged to Meredith Grey.

The logistics work because both shows are produced by ABC. Speedman praised how the medical drama has revitalized his television career. He first joined the show in 2018 and has become a familiar presence on the long-running series.

Perhaps the most intriguing question came about Felicity, the beloved ’90s drama where Speedman played Ben Covington opposite Keri Russell. Though there’s no revival currently in development, the actor said he’d be open to it.

“If we could get everyone together Keri, Scott Foley, the whole cast and the creators I’d be interested,” Speedman said. He suggested a movie or limited series could work if schedules aligned.

The real challenge? Everyone involved now has full careers, families, and other obligations pulling them in different directions.

When asked whether Ben and Felicity would still be together today, Speedman left the door open for drama. He suggested the characters might have separated by now, only to be drawn back together by an unexpected twist a concept that could work as an adult revisiting of the characters rather than simply retreading their college romance.

For now, R.J. Decker airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC, while Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursdays at the same time.
