‘South Park’ Returns as ‘South America’ With a Local Story and Little Trump Focus

After a two-season detour into White House politics, South Park is back and it’s got a new name. The long-running Comedy Central series premiered Season 29 this week as “South America,” a satirical jab at Donald Trump’s efforts to rename geographic locations. But creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone aren’t dwelling on Washington drama in the debut episode. Instead, they’re taking the action back to the fictional Colorado town and a bizarre new obsession: electric bikes.

The season opener, “South American Biker Gangs,” aired Wednesday, September 16, and marks a noticeable shift in direction. While Seasons 27 and 28 leaned heavily on Trump-centric storylines and White House intrigue complete with appearances by Satan and Vice President J.D. Vance the new premiere keeps things grounded in the everyday chaos of South America.

The episode kicks off when Cartman convinces his mother to buy him an e-bike, claiming he’s been bullied over his weight. The purchase triggers a domino effect across town as other kids demand bikes of their own. When Stan, Kyle, and Kenny resort to cheaper alternatives, the situation spirals, eventually forcing Randy Marsh and other adults to band together against what they see as a dangerous trend.

It’s a return to South Park’s classic formula: take an ordinary problem and use it as a springboard for broader social commentary. In this case, Parker and Stone examine community panic, suburban politics, and the generational divides that come with new technology all wrapped in the show’s trademark irreverent humor.

The “South America” rebrand itself remains a running joke throughout the season, a gentle reminder that the show’s political edge hasn’t dulled entirely. But for now, at least, the focus is local. And yes, Kenny still dies in the most gruesome way possible.
