Paramount+ announces that gritty crime drama Mayor of Kingstown, starring Jeremy Renner, concludes with its fifth season. This planned finale for the Taylor Sheridan-created series avoids sudden cancellation. Season 5 features only eight episodes, marking the first time one of Sheridan’s ongoing Paramount+ dramas ends while his larger TV universe expands.
Sheridan’s deal shifts as he moves his film pact from Paramount to NBCUniversal, yet he retains multiple series at Paramount+. This timing shapes the decision to end Mayor of Kingstown with Season 5. Industry reports highlight the crime thriller as a key “legacy” title, which secures a final, story-driven season despite 2025’s widespread TV cancellations and cost cuts.
Creative factors strongly propel the finale. Season 4 wrapped on December 28, 2025, and earned stellar reviews, including a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, so the show exits at its peak rather than declining. Writers now craft a definitive resolution for Mike McLusky and Kingstown’s violent power struggles in the fictional Michigan prison town.
Season 4 plunged Mike into deeper peril as new factions scramble to fill the Russian mob’s power vacuum, risking all-out gang war. Season 5 tackles incarceration, systemic corruption, and moral ambiguity head-on. Fans anticipate accountability for Kingstown’s corrupt institutions and its conflicted “mayor.”
Paramount+ withholds a Season 5 premiere date, but the news guarantees a satisfying close over cliffhangers. Sheridan pivots to Tulsa King, Landman, Lioness, and Yellowstone spinoffs, cementing Mayor of Kingstown as an early pillar of his TV empire.
