Son of Filmmaker Rob Reiner Indicted in Parents’ Deaths; Death Penalty Possible

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, was indicted this week by a Los Angeles County grand jury in the December 2025 deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home.

The indictment brings two counts of first-degree murder against Reiner, along with a critical new allegation: that he was “lying in wait” before the fatal attack. That special circumstance could pave the way for prosecutors to seek the death penalty or life without parole if he is convicted.

“This represents a profound betrayal,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said of the alleged killings, which occurred on Dec. 14, 2025.

Rob Reiner, 78, was a Hollywood titan whose directing credits span from All in the Family to beloved films including The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, and When Harry Met Sally…. Michele Singer Reiner worked as a photographer and producer, often collaborating with her husband on various projects.

The lying-in-wait allegation is particularly damaging to the defense, as it allows prosecutors to establish premeditation under California law. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will pursue capital punishment.

Reiner has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail since his arrest. The grand jury process allowed prosecutors to bypass a preliminary hearing and move directly toward trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 15.

The case has captivated Hollywood since the couple’s deaths. Reiner previously worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which explored addiction and homelessness through their complicated relationship. The allegations against him remain unproven in court.
