“Responsibility Lies With the Audience”: Parleen Gill on Watching News in the Digital Age

From Limited Sources to Unlimited Information

Over the years, the way people consume news has changed significantly. Earlier, audiences relied on only a few trusted sources, such as newspapers and Doordarshan. As a result, most people accepted the information presented to them without questioning it much.

However, the digital era has completely transformed this landscape. Today, audiences have access to multiple platforms, diverse viewpoints, and instant updates. Because of this shift, Parleen Gill believes that audiences now have more control over what they consume.

“Earlier, we had very limited sources. Now, we have multiple platforms. We can cross-check information and choose what we want to consume. That freedom is powerful,” he says.

At the same time, Gill believes that while the modern news ecosystem offers advantages, it only works well when audiences use it responsibly. 📱

More Informed, Yet More Overwhelmed

With real-time updates and on-demand content, people are undoubtedly more informed today. However, this constant stream of information also brings new challenges.

According to Gill, the accessibility of news has created both awareness and confusion.

“People are definitely more informed because information is available instantly. However, there is also information overload. Not every platform provides accurate or unbiased news,” he explains.

Therefore, he emphasizes that audiences must take greater responsibility when consuming content.

“The responsibility now lies more with the audience to filter what they consume,” he adds. ⚖️

Verifying News in the Social Media Era

Furthermore, the rise of social media platforms like X has made news consumption even more complex. While these platforms provide instant updates, they also increase the risk of misinformation.

Because of this, Gill prefers verifying information independently.

“For example, if the topic is related to space or science, I check official government or institutional handles. Going directly to the source is always safer,” he shares.

Although this approach requires extra effort, Gill believes it offers clarity and confidence in what one consumes. 🔍

Opinion-Driven News: A Double-Edged Sword

In the past, traditional news formats were formal and authoritative. Today, however, news is faster and often opinion-driven. Gill believes this shift comes with both advantages and disadvantages.

On one hand, social media has empowered people by giving them a voice. Audiences can now question authorities and share opinions more openly.

On the other hand, Gill points out that this shift has also blurred the line between facts and opinions.

“News should ideally remain neutral and factual, allowing audiences to form their own opinions. Unfortunately, that balance is often missing today,” he says.

Adapting to the Changing Media Landscape

Despite these changes, Gill believes that adaptation is essential. Instead of resisting modern trends, he focuses on maintaining balance.

“I’ve learned to accept things as they are. Every era has its pros and cons. I prefer adapting so it doesn’t affect my peace of mind,” he explains.

Moreover, Gill practices mindful news consumption.

“I consciously limit my news consumption to about 10 to 15 minutes a day. That’s enough to stay updated,” he shares. ⏱️

The Importance of Mindful Digital Consumption

Finally, Gill highlights the importance of managing digital habits. Constant scrolling, he says, can negatively impact both mental and emotional well-being.

“I’m very mindful of what I consume digitally and try to keep my algorithm healthy. Balance comes from discipline and awareness,” he concludes.

Ultimately, Gill’s message is clear: while access to news has expanded, the responsibility to consume it wisely has grown just as much. 🌍
