Patti LuPone Speaks Out as LGBTQ+ Cruise Faces Entry Ban in Egypt After Turkey Refusal

Broadway legend Patti LuPone has sharply criticized authorities after Egypt denied entry to an LGBTQ+-chartered cruise just days after Turkey blocked the same voyage. The back-to-back refusals forced organizers to overhaul the itinerary and left nearly 2,000 passengers disappointed.

The Scarlet Lady, operated by Virgin Voyages and chartered by LGBTQ+ travel company Atlantis Events, carried nearly 2,000 passengers on a Mediterranean cruise. LuPone joined the voyage as a featured performer and was scheduled to entertain guests throughout the trip.

Atlantis Events said Egyptian authorities refused permission for the ship to dock in Alexandria without offering an official explanation. The decision canceled planned excursions to Cairo and the Pyramids. Organizers said the move came as a surprise because they had successfully operated similar itineraries in the region before.

To minimize disruptions, the cruise line quickly secured alternative ports and revised the voyage schedule.

Egypt’s decision came just days after Turkey also refused to let the ship dock at its scheduled ports. Turkish officials cited concerns that the LGBTQ+-chartered cruise conflicted with the country’s social and moral values, drawing criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates and travelers worldwide.

Atlantis Events described Turkey’s decision as unprecedented in the company’s decades of organizing LGBTQ+ cruises, noting that previous voyages had visited Turkish ports without any issues.

LuPone condemned the back-to-back refusals and said passengers deserved better treatment. She continued performing for guests throughout the cruise while criticizing what she described as discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.

Despite the unexpected setbacks, Atlantis Events and Virgin Voyages arranged replacement destinations and pledged to deliver the best possible experience for passengers.

The incident has reignited global discussions about LGBTQ+ travel, destination policies, and the challenges travelers may face in countries with restrictive attitudes toward LGBTQ+ rights.
