Sydney Sweeney Rejects MAGA Barbie Label, Stays Out of Politics

People have been guessing about Sydney Sweeney’s political views for a long time. This is partly because a family party photo from 2022 showed guests wearing “Make Sixty Great Again” hats that looked like MAGA hats, and her recent American Eagle jeans ad was criticized for having racist undertones. People online called the actress from Euphoria and Anyone But You “MAGA Barbie,” even though she had never said what she thought. Her brother said that the hats were for their mother’s 60th birthday, not politics.

Sweeney said in an interview for the January 2026 cover of Cosmopolitan, “I’m not a political person.” I’m an artist. “I’m not here to talk about politics.” She said that people use her silence as a “pawn” to push their own stories. She also said, “I’ve never been here to talk about politics.” I’ve always been focused on making art. Sweeney stressed her love of telling stories over hate and instead pushed for love and respect.

Sweeney said “No” when asked if she would ever talk about her beliefs. She said there is no way to win the debate: “If I say, ‘That’s wrong,’ critics will say, ‘You’re just saying that to look better.'” She puts honesty first, even though Hollywood pressures her to do otherwise. Recently, she talked about the backlash against ads, hoping for people to come together instead of split apart.
