Oscar Winners Tim Robbins and Sissy Spacek Board Universal’s Rom-Com ‘The Catch’

Hollywood’s award-winning roster keeps growing for Universal Pictures’ romantic comedy The Catch, as Oscar winners Tim Robbins and Sissy Spacek have signed on to join Emma Stone and Chris Pine in the highly anticipated project.

Robbins will play Stone’s father in the film, while Spacek takes on the role of Pine’s aunt, lending considerable star power to a cast that’s already generating considerable buzz. Director Dave McCary, known for his work on Brigsby Bear and his tenure at Saturday Night Live, is helming the feature.

Though Universal has kept most plot details under wraps, early descriptions have compared the film to a hybrid of the sports comedy *Bull Durham* and the romantic classic Notting Hill. Stone is set to play “the most hated woman in baseball,” while Pine will portray a professional ballplayer, creating what’s being billed as an unconventional romance centered around America’s pastime.

The casting of Robbins marks a significant return to the big screen for the veteran actor, who hasn’t headlined a feature film since 2019’s Dark Waters. He’s remained visible through television work, most recently appearing in Apple’s sci-fi series Silo. Spacek, meanwhile, continues to rack up high-profile roles in acclaimed productions.

McCary and Stone have worked together previously through their production company, Fruit Tree, which has funded several well-received projects. Filming is set to kick off in New York in the coming weeks, with Universal eyeing a theatrical release for May 21, 2027.
