Apple Music is hiking subscription costs, blaming the move on climbing licensing fees. The streaming service announced the increase takes effect immediately, marking its first price bump in nearly two years.
Starting now, U.S. subscribers will pay $11.99 monthly for an individual plan, up from $10.99. The family plan jumps to $19.99 from $16.99, while students will see their rate climb to $6.99 from $5.99.
“We’re adjusting pricing as a result of rising licensing costs,” Apple said in a statement, offering little detail beyond the explanation.
The adjustment follows a pattern emerging across the streaming industry, where services like Spotify and Amazon Music have similarly raised rates over the past year to contend with soaring content expenses. Apple last raised prices in October 2022, when it bumped the individual plan by a dollar.
Existing subscribers will transition to the new pricing at their next billing date, though the company has confirmed current members won’t see immediate changes to their next payment.
