Portland documentary filmmaker Brian Lindstrom has died at 65 following a battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare degenerative brain disease. News of Brian Lindstrom dead has saddened the creative community. His wife, bestselling author Cheryl Strayed, announced his death Friday. She said he passed away surrounded by family.
In a statement, Strayed paid tribute to her late husband, describing how he “lived with gentleness and courage, grace and gratitude.” She was by his side when he died, along with their children.
Lindstrom was a respected documentarian known for his unflinching portraits of marginalized communities in Oregon. His most notable work, the 2013 film Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse, examined the death of a homeless man with schizophrenia at the hands of police.
The filmmaker’s illness had forced Strayed to step back from public life in recent weeks. The author, best known for her memoir Wild, had previously announced she was canceling appearances. She wanted to focus on her family during this difficult time.
