Obsession: Unpacking the Movie’s Shocking Ending

Indie horror hit Obsession has become the latest word‑of‑mouth sensation, with audiences leaving theaters desperate to unpack its shocking final act and the brutal fate of Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. What begins as a slightly awkward crush story spirals into a nightmare about consent, control and a supernatural “wish” gone horribly wrong.

In a new conversation, Navarrette and writer‑director Curry Barker open up about the movie’s twisty ending, why Bear’s last move changes everything and how Nikki’s future might be even more disturbing than what is shown on screen.

What Happens In Obsession’s Ending?

By the final act, Nikki has spent most of the film possessed by an unnamed entity after Bear uses a “One Wish Willow” stick to make her “love [him] more than anything in the world.” Under that spell, Nikki transforms from a grounded, caring student into someone capable of stalking, self‑harm and even killing her own friends to stay close to Bear.

The climax takes place in a house soaked in blood: Sarah is already dead, Ian has been shot in the head, and Nikki is still locked in on Bear with terrifying tunnel vision. Desperate to end the chaos, Bear swallows a handful of his grandmother’s pills in the bathroom, planning to sacrifice himself to free Nikki from the wish’s grip. But at the same time, in the next room, Nikki snaps another One Wish Willow and appears to wish for Bear to love her with the same intensity she feels for him.

The Tragic Twist: Bear’s Sacrifice And The Spell’s Rules

Right after Bear takes the pills, the wish finally flips. He walks back into the room, now just as lovesick and obsessed with Nikki as she has been with him, and the two collapse together on the couch in a brief, heartbreaking moment where their feelings finally match. Then the pills do their job. Bear dies in Nikki’s arms, and with his death, the original wish he made over Nikki is broken, releasing her from the entity that hijacked her body and mind.

Barker has revealed he originally planned a darker “Romeo and Juliet” ending, in which Nikki would also die, mirroring Bear’s fatal choice. Both endings were filmed, but the version where Nikki survives came from a single, highly technical take that Navarrette delivered with such raw emotion that it convinced Barker and even his father that the more haunting choice was to let her live.

Inde Navarrette On Nikki’s Awakening And Horror “Scream Queen” Status

Once Bear dies, Nikki snaps back to herself, covered in blood and surrounded by the bodies of multiple friends she doesn’t remember killing. Navarrette has said she felt an unusually deep connection to Nikki, fully understanding how terrifying it would be to wake up into that reality and realize that, even if she wasn’t in control, she will be held responsible.

That final shot of Nikki, dazed and devastated, is what made Barker change course: her performance sells the horror of survival more than any double‑suicide ending ever could. It also cements Navarrette as horror’s newest “scream queen,” able to swing from vulnerable to vicious and back in a way that keeps audiences glued to her every move.

Is Nikki Really Free – Or Just Doomed In A Different Way?

Even though the supernatural spell is gone, Nikki is left with a very real‑world nightmare: police sirens are closing in, and she is the only one alive at a crime scene she physically carried out, even if she was possessed. Barker has suggested that, in a realistic scenario, Nikki almost certainly faces prison time, with possible extra charges if authorities find the literal billion dollars Ian wished for before he died – money that, according to Barker, remains in the house after his death.

There is a tiny, speculative window where Nikki could clean herself up, discover the cash and disappear, but Barker admits that’s not how he imagines her story playing out. For him, the bleaker – and more honest – ending is that Nikki survives only to be crushed by guilt, trauma and a justice system that does not care about magical fine print.
