Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, ‘The Odyssey’, is proving to be a box office juggernaut. The Universal release stormed into theaters this weekend with a domestic opening north of $120 million and a stunning global launch of approximately $257.8 million—making it one of 2026’s biggest debuts.
The film’s explosive start, buoyed by strong IMAX demand and enthusiastic audience response, marks Universal’s biggest-ever opening for an R-rated film.
‘The Odyssey’ pulled in $51.2 million on Friday alone—including Thursday night previews—across roughly 3,900 North American screens. That trajectory pointed toward a $120 million-plus domestic haul for the full weekend.
The IMAX factor played a significant role in the film’s success. North American IMAX screens are expected to account for around $30 million, with an additional $22 million coming from IMAX venues internationally. Globally, the film raked in $137.3 million from 73 international markets, contributing to its $257.8 million worldwide opening weekend.
Major trade publications confirmed the momentum. Deadline projected a $120.5 million domestic opening, while Variety reported the same Friday total of roughly $51 million. These numbers came in well above earlier tracking, which had pegged the film in the $80 million to $100 million range.
If these estimates hold, ‘The Odyssey’ would become the third-biggest opening of Nolan’s career, behind only ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’. It’s also shaping up to be his largest global opening to date and 2026’s biggest live-action launch.
Audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore, a positive sign for its staying power in coming weeks. That kind of reception could translate to a healthy second-weekend hold as word-of-mouth spreads.
