Netflix’s beloved ‘Heartstopper’ is coming to an end, and its stars are opening up about what it feels like to leave the characters behind.
Kit Connor and Joe Locke, who play Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, reflected on the emotional finale in recent interviews, describing the ending as both bittersweet and fitting for the pair’s journey. The feature-length film brings the coming-of-age romance to a close as Nick prepares for university and Charlie navigates growing independence—a turning point that tests their relationship.
“Saying goodbye felt strange but rewarding,” Connor explained, noting that the cast and crew are satisfied with how the story concludes. Locke compared the experience to “sending your child off to university,” calling it natural after spending years with the character.
The film, written and created by Alice Oseman, also marks a milestone for both actors, who served as producers on the project. That hands-on role gave them greater creative input into the final chapter, allowing the movie to explore more mature themes while retaining the warmth that made ‘Heartstopper’ a global phenomenon.
Beyond the romance itself, the franchise has become known for its earnest, positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ love and youth. Connor emphasized that the show’s success proves audiences still crave uplifting queer stories, while Locke suggested the characters now belong to fans in a new and different way.
By ending the series with a film rather than stretching it across additional seasons, ‘Heartstopper Forever’ delivers a more focused emotional arc. It closes Nick and Charlie’s chapter on its own terms while leaving their future open-ended and hopeful.
