Dinesh Soni on Live Entertainment and Acting

For Dinesh Soni, live entertainment is not just about performing in front of a crowd. It is about reading the room, connecting with people and responding to whatever happens next.

After more than two decades in the entertainment industry, the actor and live performer has worked across television, films, commercials and live events. As a result, he has learned that every format demands a different skill set, especially when there is no second take.

Soni is known for his work in popular television shows such as Balika Vadhu, Piya Basanti Re, 26/12 and Baa Bahoo Aur Baby. He also won Comedy Ka Badshah and appeared in shows including Just Laugh Baaki Maaf and Darz Kiya Hai.

The Immediate Connection That Changes Everything

For Soni, the biggest difference between acting for the camera and performing live is simple. The audience reacts in real time.

“When you’re acting for television or films, there’s a camera between you and the audience,” Soni explains. “You perform, and much later you find out how people reacted. But on stage, you see every laugh, every pause, every smile as it happens.”

That instant response keeps him excited even after thousands of shows. Moreover, the audience is not simply watching. Their energy can influence the entire performance.

“Their laughter, silence, applause, expressions—everything becomes part of your performance,” he says.

The Art of Reading the Room

Unlike scripted acting, live entertainment demands spontaneity. Soni may have a planned sequence. However, an unexpected audience reaction can change everything.

“You have to read the room, improvise, change your pace and sometimes completely change your plan,” he says.

Therefore, a live performer must stay alert. A joke may need a longer pause. A segment may need to move faster. Sometimes, the entire approach may have to change.

That unpredictability makes live performance challenging. At the same time, it also makes it rewarding.

Where Acting Training Meets Live Performance

Soni’s acting training at Kreating Charakters gave him a strong technical foundation. During his training, he worked on observation, diction, voice modulation and emotional authenticity.

Meanwhile, his television experience helped him develop skills such as timing, expressions and body language. These abilities later became valuable when he moved into anchoring and live performances.

Interestingly, Soni initially viewed acting and live entertainment as separate skills. Over time, however, he discovered that they complement each other.

“Acting gave me the tools. Live entertainment taught me how to use those tools in the moment,” he says.

The Key Difference Between Scripted and Live

When acting, Soni works with a character and a predetermined script. Live performances, however, bring an entirely different challenge.

As an anchor or live performer, he interacts with real people. They do not have a script. Therefore, their reactions can be unexpected.

“As an actor, you’re given a character and dialogue. As an anchor, you’re working with real people who respond in unexpected ways,” he points out.

Because of this, Soni has learned to become more flexible. Preparation still matters. However, he also relies on instinct and observation to handle situations as they unfold.

Discipline Meets Instinct

Today, Soni no longer sees acting and live performance as two separate worlds. Instead, he combines the discipline of an actor with the spontaneity of a live performer.

This balance has become an important part of his approach. Acting taught him how to build a performance. Live entertainment, meanwhile, taught him how to adapt that performance in real time.

His career reflects that versatility. Along with television and live events, Soni has also appeared in films. His credits include a cameo in Meri Pyaari Bindu and associations with projects such as Laxman Rekha and Goggles of Rajesh Khanna.

As a result, working across multiple formats has allowed him to keep evolving as an entertainer.

Why Live Performance Still Wins

Even as technology continues to transform entertainment, Soni believes live performance remains special. On a film or television set, actors can repeat scenes. Directors can also use editing to shape the final product.

On stage, however, the moment cannot be recreated in quite the same way. Every decision happens immediately.

That pressure can be demanding. Yet, it is also what makes live performance exciting.

Every audience is different. Likewise, every venue has its own atmosphere. Most importantly, every show creates a new experience.

“There’s nothing quite like standing on a stage and feeling the energy of an audience,” Soni reflects. “The connection is immediate, the response is real, and every moment happens only once.”

Still Learning After Two Decades

For Dinesh Soni, the journey has never been about mastering just one form of entertainment. Instead, it has been about learning from every platform and bringing those lessons into the next performance.

His acting career gave him the foundation. Television strengthened his understanding of character and timing. Meanwhile, live entertainment taught him to trust his instincts and stay present.

After more than two decades, that combination continues to shape his work. And perhaps that is the biggest lesson from his journey: sometimes, the best performance is not the one that follows the plan perfectly.

It is the one that knows when to change the plan.
