The ‘Scream’ family is mourning the loss of Hayden Panettiere, who died at 36. Nancy Nayor, the casting director behind *Scream 4*, opened up this week about what drew her to cast Panettiere in the role of Kirby Reed, describing the actress as possessing a “fierce warrior nature” that made her perfect for the part.
Panettiere passed away on August 16, 2026. Her family confirmed the news, with her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, describing his daughter as an “incredible light” and a force of nature. While authorities have found no initial signs of foul play, the official cause of death remains undetermined.
When Nayor cast Panettiere in Wes Craven’s 2011 slasher sequel ‘Scream 4’, the actress stood out among a young ensemble that included Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin and Erik Knudsen, alongside franchise veterans Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.
What set Panettiere apart, according to Nayor, was her commanding presence and unmistakable strength qualities that became central to Kirby Reed’s character. The horror-obsessed teenager’s confidence and encyclopedic knowledge of scary movies proved crucial when Ghostface returned to Woodsboro, and Kirby quickly became one of the franchise’s most beloved newer characters.
Though ‘Scream 4’ left Kirby’s fate ambiguous, the franchise later confirmed she survived. Panettiere reprised the role in 2023’s ‘Scream VI’, giving fans the chance to see the character again and cementing her place in the series’ legacy.
Panettiere’s breakout roles came through television, where she played Claire Bennet on ‘Heroes’ and Juliette Barnes on ‘Nashville’. Her film credits include ‘Remember the Titans’, ‘Raising Helen’ and ‘Ice Princess’.
Since news of her death broke, tributes have poured in from co-stars and collaborators including David Arquette, Melissa Barrera and Viola Davis, all reflecting on her talent and warmth both on and off set.
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya.
