Academy Award-winning actress Jodie Foster reignited the debate over artificial intelligence in filmmaking after she described Brad Pitt’s racing drama F1 as a movie that felt “made by AI” during this week’s Aspen Ideas Festival.
Jodie Foster says Brad Pitt's F1 felt "made by AI" during the Aspen Ideas Festival, sparking fresh debate over artificial intelligence's growing influence on Hollywood filmmaking.
Foster made it clear that she wasn’t criticizing the film or its impressive box office performance. Instead, she used F1 to illustrate what she believes is Hollywood’s growing reliance on formulaic storytelling.
“I don’t say this disparagingly. The movie made millions of dollars. But I watched it and thought, ‘Wasn’t this made by AI?'”
Foster argued that F1 follows a highly polished narrative structure and predictable dialogue that resemble the kind of storytelling taught in screenwriting classes. She said every scene delivers exactly what audiences expect, making the film feel almost algorithmically designed rather than creatively inspired.
Despite her criticism, Foster praised the filmmakers for creating an entertaining blockbuster that has resonated with audiences around the world. She acknowledged that the team successfully delivered the kind of cinematic experience viewers wanted.
Beyond F1, Foster expressed broader concerns about AI’s growing influence on the entertainment industry. She warned that studios could replace creative jobs if they rely too heavily on artificial intelligence without proper safeguards.
At the same time, Foster recognized AI’s practical value during the early stages of filmmaking. She said filmmakers can use the technology for concept art, storyboarding, and previsualization, provided they protect artists’ rights and fairly compensate performers whenever studios reuse their digital likenesses or AI-generated performances.
Foster’s comments come as Hollywood continues to navigate the aftermath of industry-wide labor disputes over AI, digital rights, and creative ownership. While many filmmakers embrace AI as a powerful production tool, others worry that it could undermine originality and threaten the livelihoods of writers, actors, and other creative professionals.
Her remarks have already sparked widespread discussion online, with many fans questioning whether modern blockbuster filmmaking has become so formulaic that it can resemble content generated by artificial intelligence.
