Maggie Gyllenhaal Says Directing Gives Her Purpose While Acting Feels ‘Self-Indulgent’ Amid Gaza Tragedy

Maggie Gyllenhaal has shifted her creative focus, saying directing now fulfills her far more than acting—especially as she reflects on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Oscar-nominated actress shared her thoughts during an appearance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. While she said she still enjoys acting, she explained that directing has become a more meaningful way to spend her time.

“Acting can sometimes feel self-indulgent,” Gyllenhaal said, adding that directing gives her a stronger sense of purpose.

She said the ongoing crisis in Gaza has prompted her to rethink how she uses her time. At times, she has questioned whether making movies is the best use of her energy. Ultimately, however, she believes storytelling still matters because it helps people process difficult emotions and make sense of challenging moments.

For Gyllenhaal, directing means creating something larger than herself, which makes the work feel more rewarding than simply performing in front of the camera.

Even so, she hasn’t stepped away from acting. Instead, she said her priorities have evolved after decades in the industry. Following the critical success of her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, she has devoted more of her career to filmmaking behind the camera. Her latest film, The Bride!, reimagines Bride of Frankenstein and stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening.

Over the years, Gyllenhaal built an acclaimed acting career with performances in Secretary, Crazy Heart, and The Dark Knight. Today, she continues to expand her work as a filmmaker, choosing projects that align with both her artistic ambitions and her desire to tell stories she believes carry deeper meaning during a time of global conflict and humanitarian challenges.
