Universal Pictures and Illumination’s latest animated adventure, Minions & Monsters, claimed the No. 1 spot at the North American box office over the Independence Day holiday weekend. However, the film opened below previous entries in the blockbuster franchise.
Minions 3 opened at No. 1 over the July Fourth holiday weekend, delivering a strong box office debut despite falling short of previous franchise openings. Here's what the numbers mean.
Industry estimates project the family film will earn $64–65 million during its five-day domestic debut, marking the franchise’s lowest opening in recent years. Despite the softer start, moviegoers still turned out in large numbers, giving the film a comfortable victory over the extended holiday weekend.
Box office analysts say tougher competition contributed to the lower debut. The latest Minions installment arrived alongside strong holdovers, including Pixar’s Toy Story 5, while holiday travel, major sporting events, and seasonal activities also likely affected theater attendance.
Even so, Universal remains confident about the film’s long-term prospects. Family-oriented animated movies often attract repeat audiences and benefit from positive word of mouth throughout the summer vacation season.
The film’s reported $85 million production budget also strengthens its financial outlook. Compared with many big-budget animated releases, the lower production cost gives Minions & Monsters a clearer path to profitability, even with a smaller opening weekend.
Meanwhile, the Despicable Me and Minions franchise continues to rank among Hollywood’s most successful animated series, generating billions of dollars at the global box office over the past decade.
Minions & Monsters also extends the momentum of the 2026 summer movie season. A steady lineup of family-friendly blockbusters and major event films has continued to draw audiences back to theaters throughout June and early July.
Although the film didn’t match the record-breaking openings of earlier Minions movies, Universal now looks to strong word of mouth, repeat family viewings, and international audiences to fuel a successful theatrical run in the weeks ahead.
