Sony Pictures Snaps Up Michelle Yeoh Action Thriller ‘The Surgeon’ Following TIFF Buzz

Sony Pictures has grabbed the acquisition rights to The Surgeon, an action thriller starring Michelle Yeoh that made waves at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The studio secured distribution across North America, Latin America, Italy, China and Hong Kong after a heated bidding war among interested buyers.

Directed by Roshan Sethi who doubles as a practicing radiation oncologist the film casts Yeoh as a highly skilled surgeon who gets kidnapped and forced to operate on a mysterious patient. What her captors didn’t anticipate is that her extensive medical knowledge would become her most formidable weapon in a desperate fight for survival.

The ensemble cast includes Martin Freeman, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov and Joseph Mydell. Sethi’s background as a doctor proved invaluable in crafting the film’s medical authenticity.

The story follows Yeoh’s character as she’s pulled back into an operating room at gunpoint after stepping away from a 35-year medical career. Rather than relying solely on conventional action movie fare, The Surgeon weaponizes medical tools and surgical expertise as part of its action sequences. To ensure credibility, Yeoh trained extensively with real surgeons before filming began.

Sethi conceived the project specifically around the idea of centering an action narrative on a surgeon, drawing from his own professional medical experience to inform the script’s technical details and genre approach.

The film premiered in TIFF’s Centrepiece program and quickly emerged as one of the festival’s marquee sales titles. Sony ultimately outbid competitors to land the project, though neither party has disclosed financial terms.

Early reviews have been glowing. The film currently sits at a perfect 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 critics’ reviews, though that score may shift as more reviews roll in.

The project marks Yeoh’s return to physically demanding action roles, though with a considerably different toolkit than the martial arts-centric characters she’s tackled in past films.

Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Diarmaid McGrath are behind the project, alongside Tango’s Tim Headington, Lia Buman and Neil Shah. Yeoh also serves as an executive producer on the film.

Sony has yet to announce a theatrical release date for The Surgeon.
