Mike Leigh Says ‘Tender Loving Care’ Is “More Than Probable” to Be His Final Film

Veteran British filmmaker Mike Leigh has hinted that his new drama Tender Loving Care will “more than probably” be his last film, potentially marking the end of a career that has spanned over five decades.

Speaking at the San Sebastián Film Festival, where Tender Loving Care screened as part of the 2026 festival, Leigh addressed both the film and his future plans. The acclaimed director has previously discussed his battle with myositis, a muscular condition that has made the physical demands of filmmaking increasingly challenging.

Tender Loving Care stays true to Leigh’s signature style, focusing on ordinary people, complicated relationships, and the emotional complexities of daily life. The 107-minute drama follows Amy and Rosie, two lifelong friends who work in social services while juggling their own personal and family difficulties.

Kate O’Flynn portrays Amy, a child welfare worker who moves back home following the breakdown of a relationship.
