Netflix has axed The Boroughs, the sci-fi mystery series, after just one season. The show, which had the backing of Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer as executive producers, debuted in May 2026 and was initially positioned as one of the streamer’s most promising genre bets.
Netflix has canceled The Boroughs after one season. The Duffer Brothers-produced sci-fi mystery series starring Alfred Molina and Geena Davis will not return for Season 2.
Developed by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs followed a group of retirees in a quiet New Mexico community as they stumble upon a supernatural menace. The series, often billed as ” Stranger Things for seniors,” boasted a strong ensemble cast that included Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Clarke Peters and Denis O’Hare.
The cancellation came less than a month after the show premiered on Netflix. While critics praised the series and early interest seemed strong, viewership dropped sharply after the first week—enough for Netflix to shelve any future seasons. A writers room for Season 2 had already been set up, with the creators hoping to expand the story across multiple seasons.
Creator Jeffrey Addiss said the team deliberately designed the finale to give viewers a sense of closure rather than leave them hanging on cliffhangers. The decision reflected lessons learned from the early cancellation of their previous series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
The Boroughs is one of several projects the Duffer Brothers have produced under their Upside Down Pictures banner since Stranger Things became a cultural phenomenon. The duo remains busy with other ventures, including the animated Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 and the upcoming limited series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.
The cancellation marks another casualty on Netflix’s ever-growing list of one-season originals, dashing hopes that The Boroughs would become the next major franchise from the Stranger Things creators.
