Piers Morgan has criticised SXSW London over its response after two U.S. political commentators were blocked from entering the UK to take part in the festival.
Discover Piers Morgan's stance on SXSW London as he condemns the festival for not addressing entry denials of commentators.
Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker were due to appear at the event before the UK Home Office revoked their entry authorisations. Morgan accused the festival of “silence” in the wake of the decision, arguing that it should have taken a stronger public stance.
SXSW London confirmed the pair would no longer be participating, but said visa and entry matters are ultimately the responsibility of the government. The festival also highlighted its broader programme of more than 800 speakers and performances.
Morgan rejected that position, saying major cultural institutions have a responsibility to defend open debate, particularly when political controversy affects invited guests.
The UK government said the decision was based on concerns that the individuals’ presence “may not be conducive to the public good,” without providing detailed public reasoning. Reports have linked the move to past comments by both commentators, particularly on Israel and wider geopolitical issues.
The decision has reignited debate around free speech and the limits of platform access. Free speech advocates argue that excluding speakers risks narrowing public discourse and setting a precedent for political restrictions on international forums.
Supporters of the ban, however, say the government is justified in denying entry to individuals whose rhetoric could inflame tensions, citing concerns over antisemitism and public order.
Critics counter that such decisions undermine open dialogue and weaken democratic principles by limiting participation in global cultural events like SXSW.
The controversy has placed additional pressure on SXSW London, which promotes itself as a platform for diverse and often provocative voices. While organisers maintain that immigration decisions are outside their control, the backlash underscores growing expectations for cultural institutions to respond more directly when political rulings affect their line-ups.
The dispute highlights an ongoing tension between government authority, institutional responsibility, and the boundaries of free expression at major international festivals.
