Ron Howard and Brian Grazer Tease ‘The Grinch’ Sequel, Praise YouTube Filmmakers

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer aren’t ruling out a return to Whoville.

Quick Summary

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer tease a potential How the Grinch Stole Christmas sequel and discuss how YouTube filmmakers and digital creators are reshaping the future of Hollywood.

The Oscar-winning filmmakers revealed at UCLA’s Entertainment Symposium this week that they’ve been seriously considering a sequel to their 2000 holiday hit How the Grinch Stole Christmas for some time now. “It’s something we’ve thought about for a long time,” Howard said during the conversation with his longtime partner at Imagine Entertainment.

The original film, which starred Jim Carrey as Dr. Seuss’s grumpy titular character, became a box office juggernaut and has remained a holiday staple for over two decades. According to recent reports, Universal and Imagine Entertainment are actively developing a follow-up, with Carrey expected to reprise his role and Howard set to direct.

But the duo had more on their minds than just sequels. Howard and Grazer also weighed in on how YouTube creators and independent filmmakers are reshaping Hollywood, praising the wave of digital talent finding massive audiences outside the traditional studio system. The pair said they’re impressed by how emerging creators are carving out their own paths in entertainment without needing a major label to back them.

“Talented people are finding audiences,” Grazer noted, underscoring how the landscape has fundamentally shifted.

It’s a notable stance from two executives who’ve built an empire at Imagine Entertainment since 1986, with credits like A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13 under their belt. While they haven’t announced an official release date or confirmed casting for the potential sequel, the prospect alone has fans hopeful for a Grinch comeback.
