Stan Lee Documentary Gets Distribution Deal After Years in Limbo

A long-awaited documentary chronicling the final years of Marvel co-creator Stan Lee has finally found a distributor. Osmosis Global has acquired the rights to “Stan Lee: The Final Chapter,” a film that details allegations of exploitation during the comic book legend’s declining health in the years before his 2018 death.

The documentary will make its debut on July 27, 2026, at the Dances with Film festival in Los Angeles, marking a turning point for a project that faced production challenges and a failed crowdfunding campaign.

Directed by Jon Bolerjack, who served as Lee’s assistant during his final four years, the documentary draws on behind-the-scenes recordings that expose how people close to the 95-year-old icon allegedly took advantage of his vulnerability. According to the film, rivals fought over Lee’s fortune through a lucrative but shadowy market for his signatures and memorabilia—sales that reportedly generated substantial profits while Lee and his family saw little benefit.

The documentary alleges that Lee was pressured to continue signing merchandise despite serious health complications, and that competing opportunists betrayed one another in attempts to control access to the aging creator’s autograph and image rights.

Lee co-created some of Marvel’s most iconic characters, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, and Black Panther. He died on November 8, 2018, at age 95.

Bolerjack and the filmmakers say the documentary aims to honor Lee’s legacy by revealing what they describe as the “truly heartbreaking” reality of his final chapter. The Osmosis Global deal signals the film’s readiness for a broader theatrical and streaming release after the festival premiere.
