Busan Film Festival 2026 Announces 23 Titles for Vision Korea and Vision Asia Sections

The 2026 Busan International Film Festival has unveiled its Vision lineup, putting 23 independent films from Korea and across Asia in the spotlight.

The selection features 12 Korean films in Vision Koreaand11 titles from emerging Asian filmmakers in Vision Asia. Together, the sections highlight a new generation of filmmakers and strengthen Busan’s role as a major launchpad for independent Asian cinema.

The Vision program champions bold independent filmmaking from Korea and Asia. It focuses on original stories and filmmakers with fresh perspectives.

This year, Busan continues that mission by bringing filmmakers working outside the mainstream to an international audience. The lineup also gives viewers a closer look at the ideas, styles and stories shaping Asian independent cinema today.

One of the notable selections is Birds in the Dark (Hanere De Panchi), a Punjabi-language feature directed by Shashank Walia and backed by producer Hansal Mehta. The film will make its world premiere at Busan.

Walia shot the film in black and white across rural Punjab. The story explores gender, caste, class, labor and solidarity. Mauli Singh, Sapna Das, Harwinder Aujla, Shahnawaz Bhat and Navdeep Bajwa lead the cast.

The Vision Korea section features 12 independent Korean productions. The films showcase the range and ambition of the country’s emerging filmmakers.

Busan has long used the Vision program to give independent Korean directors an international platform. The festival continues to champion filmmakers whose work has yet to reach a wider global audience.

The new lineup also arrives as Korean cinema continues to expand its international reach. Korean filmmakers regularly earn spots at major festivals, collect international awards and secure distribution deals around the world.

The Vision Asia section features 11 films from emerging filmmakers across the continent.

The lineup introduces audiences to filmmakers working with different cultures, experiences and cinematic styles. It also creates opportunities for directors to connect with international audiences, distributors and industry professionals.

The inclusion of Birds in the Dark further expands the program’s geographic reach. The Punjabi-language film brings a South Asian perspective to a section that showcases independent filmmaking from across the continent.

The Vision announcement comes as the Busan International Film Festival continues to reshape its programming while maintaining its focus on Asian cinema.

The festival marked its 30th anniversary in 2025 by launching a dedicated Asian competition. That move strengthened Busan’s position as a major platform for filmmakers from across the region.

Busan will also honor Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh as its Asian Filmmaker of the Year. Yeoh will receive the award during the festival’s opening ceremony on October 6.

The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs from October 6 to October 15, 2026, in South Korea. The 23 Vision selections will put emerging filmmakers at the center of the festival and give audiences an early look at the voices shaping the future of Asian independent cinema.
