‘A Different World’ Returns: Netflix Brings Hillman College Back for a New Era

Nearly four decades after the original sitcom debuted as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, Netflix is reviving the beloved college comedy A Different World with a fresh crop of students at the fictional historically Black Hillman College.

The new series, created by Felicia Pride, centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Hadestown star Maleah Joi Moon. She’s the daughter of original favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert roles reprised by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy. As Deborah navigates her freshman year, she grapples with carving out her own identity while living up to her family’s legacy.

The revival introduces a new ensemble including Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, Chibuikem Uche and Dasan Frazier. Their characters explore the full spectrum of college life friendships, romance, academic challenges and the pressure of stepping out from family shadows.

Several original cast members return to bridge the old and new. Beyond Hardison and Guy, Debbie Allen, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer and Jada Pinkett Smith make appearances, connecting the new narrative to Hillman’s storied past while keeping the spotlight on the younger generation.

The Netflix version trades the original’s multi-camera sitcom format for a contemporary single-camera approach. The 10-episode first season explores today’s college landscape through issues like financial strain, mental health, activism and HBCU funding challenges while maintaining the franchise’s focus on relationships and everyday student life.

Debbie Allen directed three episodes, including the premiere.

The revival a charming, intelligent continuation that captures the original’s spirit without relying solely on nostalgia. Rather than simply recreating what came before, the new series uses Hillman’s next generation to examine what college looks like today.
