In a surprising last-minute shift, Andrew Garfield’s upcoming historical drama The Uprising is getting a new marketing push that ties the film directly to the Robin Hood legend. The Paul Greengrass-directed project, which had been promoted as a straightforward account of the 1381 English Peasants’ Revolt, is now being positioned with a fresh angle just weeks before hitting theaters.
Focus Features has started promoting the film under the expanded title The Uprising: Rise of Robin Hood, a move that caught many by surprise. The studio’s official pages still list it simply as The Uprising and describe it as a rebellion story set against King Richard II’s reign, but the new marketing clearly emphasizes the Robin Hood connection.
The timing is curious given that the film examines the real historical uprising that scholars have long connected to the origins of the Robin Hood legend. Rather than reimagining the outlaw as a fantastical character, the movie appears to explore the actual historical circumstances that may have inspired the myth.
Garfield plays the leader of the rebellion, rallying commoners against the Crown during a period of economic hardship and heavy taxation. Director Greengrass, known for the Bourne franchise and Captain Phillips, both wrote and directed the project, bringing his trademark action-driven style to the medieval material.
The ensemble cast includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Thomasin McKenzie and Jonny Lee Miller, among others.
The road to the screen has been winding. The project was initially called The Hood with Benedict Cumberbatch attached, then became The Rage when Matthew McConaughey joined. After both actors departed, Garfield signed on and the title shifted to The Uprising.
The film arrives September 11, 2026, with a runtime of roughly two hours and eight minutes.
