Brad Bird Shuts Down ‘Ratatouille 2’ Talk, Insists Pixar Classic Stands on Its Own

Don’t expect Remy the rat to return to the kitchen anytime soon. Oscar-winning director Brad Bird has firmly ruled out making a sequel to Pixar’s 2007 animated classic Ratatouille, despite years of fan demand and reported interest from Pixar executives.

Quick Summary

Brad Bird says Ratatouille 2 is not in the works, explaining that Pixar's beloved animated classic already told a complete story. Here's why the Oscar-winning director isn't interested in a sequel.

In a recent interview, Bird made his position clear: Ratatouille already told the story he wanted to tell, and he sees no reason to revisit it.

When asked whether he would ever make Ratatouille 2, Bird didn’t hesitate.

“I don’t,” he said, shutting down the idea of a sequel. Although Pixar executives have occasionally suggested revisiting the franchise, Bird said he has consistently declined because he believes the original film ended exactly where it should have.

Bird also criticized the growing trend of producing sequels simply because a film succeeds commercially. He believes a follow-up should only move forward if filmmakers have a meaningful new story to tell—not because audiences expect one.

“We told that story,” Bird said, emphasizing that Ratatouille already achieved everything it set out to accomplish.

Pixar’s interest is understandable. Released in 2007, Ratatouille became both a critical and commercial success, earning more than $620 million worldwide and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The story of Remy, a rat determined to become a chef in Paris, continues to resonate with audiences nearly two decades later.

Actor Patton Oswalt, who voiced Remy, recently said he would happily return for a sequel if Bird came up with the right idea. However, Bird’s latest comments make it clear that he has no plans to revisit the beloved animated film.

Instead, the filmmaker has turned his attention to new projects. He is directing the animated sci-fi noir film Ray Gunn for Netflix and is also writing and executive producing Incredibles 3 for Pixar.

For Bird, Ratatouille has already earned its place among Pixar’s greatest films, and he believes its story is best left untouched.
