‘Congo Boy’: Rafiki Fariala Brings His Refugee Story to Locarno After Cannes Success

Filmmaker Rafiki Fariala is taking his deeply personal film ‘Congo Boy’ to the 2026 Locarno Film Festival, building on its acclaimed debut at Cannes. The musical drama draws directly from Fariala’s own experiences as a Congolese refugee who grew up in the Central African Republic.

The film, which will screen in Locarno’s Piazza Grande, follows a young musician navigating family responsibilities and political violence as he tries to build a future for himself and his siblings.

Fariala directed and co-wrote ‘Congo Boy’, which centers on 17-year-old Robert, a Congolese refugee living in Bangui. Robert dreams of becoming a musician, but his aspirations clash with harsh realities: when his parents are imprisoned, he becomes the sole provider for his four younger siblings.

Balancing school, manual work, family care and his passion for music becomes an overwhelming juggling act. But it’s one Fariala knows intimately. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he fled to the Central African Republic as a child with his family. Like his fictional protagonist, Fariala faced difficult family circumstances while clinging to his creative dreams.

The director has said the film represents his attempt to capture what it truly means to grow up as a young refugee in Central Africa a story that goes far beyond typical war or displacement narratives.
