Kiyoshi Kurosawa Steps Into Period Drama With Intriguing ‘The Samurai and the Prisoner’

Renowned Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa has unveiled the first trailer for The Samurai and the Prisoner, marking his first venture into the samurai genre. Instead of relying on traditional sword-fighting action, the film delivers a tense mix of historical drama and psychological mystery.

Quick Summary

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's The Samurai and the Prisoner trailer debuts, showcasing a gripping samurai mystery starring Masahiro Motoki and Masaki Suda. The Cannes-premiered film is based on Honobu Yonezawa's Kokurojo.

Based on Honobu Yonezawa’s award-winning novel Kokurojo, the story reimagines a real historical siege as a gripping murder mystery set during Japan’s Sengoku era. Masahiro Motoki stars as warlord Araki Murashige, who rebels against the powerful Oda Nobunaga and barricades himself inside Arioka Castle. As the siege drags on and tensions rise, a mysterious murder inside the fortress threatens to destroy the fragile trust among those trapped within.

Desperate to uncover the killer, Murashige turns to an unlikely ally—his own prisoner. Masaki Suda plays Kuroda Kanbei, a brilliant military strategist who investigates the crime from his dungeon cell, using sharp deductive skills to unravel the castle’s hidden secrets.

The trailer focuses on mounting suspicion, political intrigue, and psychological tension rather than large-scale battle sequences, staying true to Kurosawa’s signature storytelling style. The ensemble cast also features Yuriko Yoshitaka, Munetaka Aoki, Ryota Miyadate, Joe Odagiri, Tasuku Emoto, and Yusuke Santamaria.

Kurosawa not only directed the film but also adapted the screenplay, making The Samurai and the Prisoner his first traditional period drama after earning international acclaim for Cure, Pulse, Wife of a Spy, and Cloud.

The film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival before opening in Japanese theaters on June 19. Charades is handling international sales as anticipation continues to grow following the trailer’s release.

With its blend of historical spectacle, detective fiction, and psychological suspense, The Samurai and the Prisoner promises a fresh and compelling take on the samurai genre.
