Chris Carter Gets Second Shot at His Darker Vision for ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’

Nearly 20 years after ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’ hit theaters, creator Chris Carter is finally getting the chance to show audiences the movie he originally envisioned.

The 2008 film is coming back in a new R-rated director’s cut called ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn’. This version will restore the horror elements that ended up on the cutting room floor when the studio pushed for a PG-13 rating, allowing Carter to present a grittier, more unsettling take on the material.

“The original movie was altered to secure a PG-13 rating,” Carter explained previously. The upcoming cut aims to undo those compromises and deliver the intense, darker film he had in mind.

The director’s cut reunites David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Unlike the first ‘X-Files’ movie, which focused on the show’s alien mythology, this 2008 sequel abandoned that storyline for a standalone supernatural thriller.

The plot follows Mulder and Scully investigating a missing FBI agent with only a disgraced priest claiming to have psychic visions as their lead. The new cut emphasizes body horror and disturbing medical experimentation themes reflected in its peculiar subtitle, ‘Vrach Frankenshteyn’, which nods to Frankenstein.

When the original film was released in 2008, six years after the TV series ended, it disappointed both critics and audiences. Despite generating excitement among devoted fans, it grossed just $68 million worldwide a far cry from the first ‘X-Files’ feature’s $189 million haul.

Now, without theatrical constraints, Carter has a chance to reshape the project entirely. Rather than simply restoring deleted scenes, the new version represents a complete reimagining of his original intent.

For longtime ‘X-Files’ enthusiasts, that’s potentially significant. The director’s cut could finally reveal the scarier film Carter wanted audiences to see back in 2008.

The new version maintains the chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson, but amplifies the horrifying nature of their investigation. A trailer has already showcased some of the disturbing material.

The release also comes as a new ‘X-Files’ series from filmmaker Ryan Coogler is in development.

‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn’ arrives on August 14, 2026, on Hulu and Disney+. After nearly two decades, Carter finally has his chance to scare audiences the way he originally intended.
