Chelsea Handler Calls Out “Racist” Jokes at Kevin Hart Netflix Roast

Comedian Chelsea Handler isn’t holding back after Netflix’s roast of Kevin Hart. She’s taking aim at Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe, accusing them of crossing the line with material she describes as “racist,” “bigoted,” and “sexist”—and sparking a heated conversation about how far comedy should go.

Handler opened up about her concerns during an appearance on Deon Cole’s Funny Knowing You podcast, discussing jokes from the May 10 livestreamed event. She zeroed in on Gillis’s reference to lynching, where he joked that Hart was “so short you’d have to lynch him from a bonsai tree.” Handler made clear that jokes about lynching Black people aren’t funny and shouldn’t be part of any routine.

She was equally critical of Hinchcliffe’s remarks about Sheryl Underwood’s late husband, who died by suicide. Handler called that material “gross,” “disgusting,” and “lazy.” She argued both comedians relied on racism and sexism rather than actual wit, and claimed she’d heard from women who dated them that reinforced her assessment.

Gillis isn’t apologizing. He’s defended the roast’s edgy tone, arguing that the whole point of roasts is to push boundaries and test what’s funny versus what’s offensive. In his response, he dismissed Handler’s criticism as overblown and suggested she was more interested in positioning herself as a moral authority than genuinely defending Hart.

The feud has become one of the biggest stories coming out of the roast. While some are praising Handler for holding comedians accountable, others argue that roasts are a unique format where transgressive humor is part of the deal—and shouldn’t be censored in the name of sensitivity.

The real debate now? Where the line actually is between offensive comedy and responsible comedy in 2026.
