Meghan Markle’s rumored return to acting has stalled before it could get off the ground. The Duchess of Sussex was reportedly in talks to join Guy Ritchie’s Netflix crime series The Gentlemen for a potential third season. However, the deal now appears to have fallen apart following significant backlash in Britain.
Veteran journalist Tina Brown first reported the development in her Substack newsletter. She claimed that producers shelved Markle’s reported casting after facing a strong negative reaction in the U.K.
The report surfaced just one day after revealed that Markle had entered advanced negotiations to join the series. According to the earlier report, producers had been developing a role specifically for her.
Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, said the production quietly dropped the reported casting.
Her report came shortly after news broke that Markle was deep in discussions for the potential role. However, neither Netflix nor the production team ever officially confirmed her involvement. Netflix has also not renewed The Gentlemen for a third season. As a result, Markle never received an official cast announcement.
According to Brown, the backlash in Britain played a major role in the production’s decision. She suggested that the strength of the reaction made it difficult for the series to move ahead with Markle.
Netflix has not publicly addressed the reports. Markle’s representatives have also remained silent about whether she formally joined the project.
Markle’s representative and her talent agency, WME, declined to comment when approached. Netflix also declined to respond to questions about the reported casting and its apparent withdrawal.
Brown, meanwhile, has stood by her reporting. Still, the people directly involved in the production have not independently confirmed the details.
That leaves several questions unanswered, including whether Markle ever formally signed a deal and whether producers had already created the role specifically for her.
The reported role would have given Markle a major opportunity to return to scripted television.
Before marrying Prince Harry, Markle built her acting career through television. She became best known for playing Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits. She left the series in 2017 after becoming engaged to Harry and subsequently stepped away from acting.
Since then, Markle has continued working in entertainment through production projects and Netflix collaborations with Harry. However, she has largely avoided returning to traditional acting.
Joining The Gentlemen could have marked a significant new chapter in her career. A role in The Gentlemen would have placed Markle in a high-profile Netflix production led by Guy Ritchie.
The series adapts Ritchie’s 2019 crime comedy film of the same name. Theo James leads the television adaptation, with Kaya Scodelario also among its principal cast members.
The show has developed a strong international audience on Netflix, making a role in the series a potentially high-profile comeback for Markle. Season two is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 3. However, Netflix has yet to officially announce a third season.
The reported casting setback comes as Markle and Prince Harry face renewed speculation about their future connection to Britain.
The couple have lived in California for several years after stepping back from their roles as senior working members of the royal family. Recent reports have suggested that they could spend more time in the U.K. with their children.
If those reports prove accurate, Markle’s potential appearance in a British-set series such as The Gentlemen could have offered an interesting link between her professional comeback and a possible return to the country.
For now, however, neither development has received full official confirmation.
Because Netflix has not confirmed The Gentlemen Season 3, the fate of the reported character remains unclear. Producers could ultimately recast the part if the series receives a renewal. They could also abandon the character altogether.
For Markle, the reported collapse represents a potentially significant missed opportunity to return to acting. Yet, without confirmation from Netflix, Markle’s representatives or the production team, the circumstances surrounding the reported casting remain uncertain.
For now, the story rests largely on Brown’s reporting and the earlier reports about Markle’s negotiations.
Until the parties involved provide an official statement, Markle’s reported The Gentlemen casting and its alleged withdrawal should be treated as unconfirmed.
