Dave Bautista Shows Off Kratos Transformation Ahead of ‘God of War’ Series

Dave Bautista is getting back into fighting shape for one of his most physically demanding roles yet. The actor and former WWE star has revealed his early body transformation as he prepares to play Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action ‘God of War’ series.

Bautista shared a gym video showing off his progress after just three weeks of weight training. In the clip, the actor even throws in a character-inspired roar, giving fans an early glimpse at the imposing physique he’s building to portray the legendary Spartan warrior.

“Third week in to weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin’ a bike! LFG!” Bautista wrote alongside the footage.

The physical preparation marks a significant shift for Bautista, who has spent recent years trimming down for various roles. Known for his muscular WWE career and his portrayal of Drax in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films, Bautista now has to rebuild the imposing frame that defines Kratos.

His latest update shows he’s taking the transformation seriously, though he still has roughly two more months of training ahead before reaching his target physique.

Bautista officially took on the role in August after Ryan Hurst, the original choice for Kratos, suffered a serious biceps injury while filming a stunt. Hurst’s recovery was expected to significantly delay production, leading Prime Video and Sony to recast the role.

The casting change means Bautista is stepping into a production that had already begun filming in Vancouver. Scenes previously shot with Hurst will need to be reshot with Bautista in place.

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the series, set to film back-to-back. The show is being developed by ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘Outlander’ veteran Ronald D. Moore, who serves as writer and showrunner.

The story will follow Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they journey to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Along the way, the former warrior must confront gods and monsters while rebuilding his relationship with his son.

Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus, with a supporting cast that includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Max Parker as Heimdall.

Bautista has also won over an important voice from the ‘God of War’ franchise: Christopher Judge, the acclaimed voice and motion-capture performer behind Kratos in the video games.

Judge revealed he had auditioned for the live-action role but ultimately decided against taking on the physical demands of heading a television series at this stage of his career. Still, he’s expressed confidence that Bautista can bring something special to the character.

With filming expected to resume later this year and Bautista continuing his transformation, fans will soon see how the former WWE powerhouse interprets one of gaming’s most iconic characters.

Prime Video has not yet announced an official release date for the ‘God of War’ series.
